Honours Evening 2011
The achievements of the young people at Harrow High School were celebrated on Thursday 7th July 2011. The awards evening was used to reflect on the excellent outcomes for many of the learners at the school in different fields; academic, sporting and extra-curricular. Although we give out awards and certificates at year group assemblies each half term at school, this event acknowledged and celebrated the achievements of those for whom effort, dedication, perseverance and true outstanding contributions to our school community marked them apart as our top learners.
The evening started with welcome drinks for learners and parents in the inner quad before a warm hello by Headteacher Mr Gamble. Major General Andrew Ritchie CBE, honoured past pupil and now Director of Goodenough College in Bloomsbury London, presented the awards to the learners. This was followed by a music recital from the Harrow High School Choir and finally the closing address was given by the Chair of Governors, Mr Peter Hamill.
Awards included; The Centenary Award, Outstanding Contribution to the School, Outstanding Extra Curricular Achievement, the Writing Cup, Head Learner Awards and the Headteacher’s Honour Award. Learners who had been awarded prizes externally throughout the school year were also acknowledged. These learners included winners of the Jack Petchey Award and the UK Maths Challenge Award.

Big Bang Fair Prize Winners
Harrow High School recently participated in the National Science and Engineering Competition at the Big Bang Fair, a celebration of science and engineering for young people, for London and the South East at the Science Museum. This was the regional heat with 150 schools competing and our Year 8 team, Lorelle and Jyoti, went through with seven other teams to the final. They were awarded a prize by the Institute of Physics for taking part in the junior physics category, with a project about the use of Parabolic Mirrors to light the Olympic flame. They did marvellously to have got as far as they did against some very strong competition. Well done, Lorelle and Jyoti!
From Gayton Road to Pennsylvania Avenue: education, diplomacy and the special relationship: May 2011
The second of our centenary lectures was a huge success on the evening of Saturday 21st May. Old Gaytonian Sir Nigel Sheinwald, spoke about his role as British Ambassador to the USA. He commented on the special relationship between the UK and the USA, and also gave the audience an insight into the many prime ministers he has worked with during his career as a diplomat.
Sir Nigel Sheinwald is based in Washington and he is in the UK to accompany a visit from President Obama. His successful career in Washington made for an interesting discussion.Old Gaytonian Keith Adamson said, ‘For me the best success of the evening was the students.
I don’t think [deputy head boy and girl] Rikesh and Warsan could quite come to terms with Sir Nigel having studied in the same building as themselves, and there he was chatting to them in the most friendly way. It did both of them good to speak at the end, and they realised that there was no better way to spend last Saturday evening.’
Radio 4 Any Questions: May 2011
On Friday 6th May 2011 Harrow High School hosted BBC Radio 4s Any Questions. Nearly 300 guests from the surrounding areas and local community filled the school hall for the live BBC broadcast. Jonathan Dimbleby presented the show and the panel consisted of the Daily Mail’s parliamentary sketch writer and theatre critic Quentin Letts, Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander, Liberal Democrat Baroness Shirley Williams of Crosby, and Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Jeremy Hunt. Everything ran smoothly and it was an enjoyable event adding to the wider success of the school’s centenary program. Congratulations to the Royal Couple: March 2011
Harrow High School has been collecting photographs of family weddings since last month. Learners and staff have collated a collage of weddings from the many different cultures represented within the school. Learners were asked to use the opportunity of the union of William and Kate as a celebration of the unity between our different cultures. They brought in their photographs from home and the result is a collage of photographs which has been made into a card and sent to William and Kate. Harrow High school would like to wish the happy couple huge congratulations!

Voices That Should Be Heard: March 2011
As part of the centenary celebrations Voices that should be heard ran for two performances at Harrow High School on the evening of Saturday 26th March 2011. The evening was a huge success and members of the public enjoyed the evening very much.
The specially written choral cycle was composed by Bryan Kessleman. The performers included Jonathan Coad from the Royal Opera, Singer Nadine Mortimer-Smith, a live orchestra, singers from both the Amici Chamber Choir and the Tonic Choir and a group our very own learners from year 7.
Learner Talia John-Baptiste said, ‘it was an amazing experience to sing in front of 170 people for both performances and it was an honour to sing with the adult choir. At first I was very nervous. But when you got out to the stage and started singing it was more fun than scary.’
Harrow High School wishes to thank the Old Gaytonians Association who put in a tremendous effort to organise the concert along with Head of Year 7, Mr Baker, and music teacher Miss Hughes. The renaissance of music in the school will continue with school and community focused arts events later in the year.
