English Department Mission Statement

In English, we aim to nurture and support learners’ love of literature and language. The English Department aims to develop skill and confidence in the three key areas of English: Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. All three are valued equally in the department and a wide variety of activities and strategies are used to help learners engage with these important communication skills.

In years 8 and 9, learners will study a range of prose, poetry, non-fiction, media and drama. The National Literacy Strategy informs lessons and learners are prepared for the national SATs tests at the end of year 9.

In years 10 and 11, learners study for two GCSEs; one in English and one in English Literature. 5 pieces of coursework are written in year 10 and contribute between 20% and 30% to final GCSE grades. A range of set texts and exam skills are taught over the two years of the course.
