Behaviour Policy

Aims:

Harrow High School and Sports College aims to raise standards and achievement by ensuring that every individual is given the opportunity to develop his/her full potential. This will be achieved through high quality teaching and learning and by rigorously tackling underachievement.

Alongside this, high standards of behaviour and punctuality will be secured through continuously developing a positive climate for learning, which is socially engaging and inclusive and emphasises consideration and respect for learners and staff.

Principles:

It is the collective responsibility of the entire learning community to ensure that all learners are valued and enabled to achieve their full potential. All staff will be respected and ensure high quality teaching and learning. As such, this policy is based on the premise that:

  • Everyone has the right to learn and work in a purposeful, orderly and calm environment, without being disrupted by others
  • Everyone has the right to feel safe;
  • Everyone has the right to have their voice heard and their concerns listened to;
  • Everyone has the right to be treated with fairness and respect.

Learner’s Responsibilities

To be a part of Harrow High School’s community on the way to and from school. To be sensible, dress appropriately and be aware of others’ health and safety.

At registration, learners will:

* Arrive before 8:45am
* Be in full school uniform and wearing their uniform appropriately
* Be prepared for learning, ensuring they have their planner, smartcards, pens and school equipment including PE kit where necessary.

In class, learners will:

* Be punctual to lessons and settle quickly
* Wear the Harrow High School uniform correctly at all times during the school day (refer to Student Planner for further details)

* Treat the environment, teachers and learners with respect and kindness
* Share the responsibility for creating a positive and orderly learning environment
* Make appropriate choices about behaviour and learning and accept consequences for inappropriate choices

At breaks and lunchtimes, learners will:

* Behave sensibly and respectfully towards staff, each other and school property in communal areas
* Positively represent the school if leaving the school site for lunch (KS 5 only)

In corridors and between lessons, learners will:

* Follow the Corridor Rules

1. Move sensibly to lesson on the first bell
2. Only use lockers during break times or before and after school
3. Move around the building calmly and quietly - avoid shouting as this disrupts learning
4. Take care of the school environment
5. Follow all staff requests promptly

Responsible use of electronic items
Mobile phones/MP3 players should be used responsibly.

What is responsible use?

  • Ensure all headphones and earpieces are out of sight during and on the way to lessons.
  • Ensuring it is off, or on silent during lesson times
  • Taking responsibility for the phone/mp3 player
  • Ensure it does not disrupt learning
  • Only using it responsibly during break or lunch time.

What is inappropriate use?

  • Wearing headphones/earpieces around the neck or attached to clothing
  • Texting or talking on the phone in lessons
  • Listening to music on the phone during lessons
  • Taking photographs of others without their consent
  • Videoing others without their consent
  • ‘Happy slapping’ – this is ‘cyber’ bullying and will be dealt with as such
  • Circulating inappropriate information using Bluetooth, SMS or MMS – this is also ‘cyber’ bullying and will be dealt with as such.

Rewards

Learners are commended for good behaviour and may be rewarded in a number of ways including through conversation, through planners or through phone calls home.

Learners in Key Stage 3 can collect merits from staff and will receive badges and certificates at certain milestones. They will also be entered into termly prize draws for attendance and punctuality prizes and they will be able to trade their merit awards for high street vouchers.

Learners at Key Stage 4 can collect merits and when reaching certain milestones, will then be able to trade these in for vouchers for high street vouchers too. They will also be awarded certificates for attendance and punctuality and for reaching specific levels of credits collected.

Sanctions

Behaviour that prevents us from achieving our aims, is dealt with quickly and effectively. In all cases, staff will use the ‘Ladder of Consequence’. This involves giving the learner a first warning, followed by a final warning. If the behaviour continues, a member of staff can issue one or more of the consequences. In very rare cases, where behaviour poses a threat to learners or staff, learners may be escorted, without warning, from the situation.

Ladder of Consequences

It is an expectation that all adults own our policy. Members of the Education Support Team implement the policy along with all teaching staff. Guidelines are in place for dealing with poor behaviour.
