This week we are listening to a collection of works by Antonio Vivaldi, and Italian composer of the Baroque period. He is best known for the Four Seasons violin concertos, excerpts of which feature on our playlist this week. His concertos are bright and often exuberant drawing upon innovative structures and themes.
His work encompasses far more than string concertos and we will also hear a number of Arias from his operatic work as well as some choral pieces. His operatic style was very progressive and caused tension between Vivaldi and more conservative composers of the era although his work has been incredibly influential, most notably upon J.S. Bach.
