Year 10 letter from Headteacher 07.05.2020

Dear Parents, Carers and Learners

Year 10 GCSE Option courses

As you will be aware, your son/daughter was due to sit up to 3 GCSE examinations this summer. Unfortunately, due to the nationwide lockdown, these exams have been cancelled.

After very careful consideration, the school has decided that we will not be applying for estimated grades to be awarded to Year 10 learners. Instead, we will make the necessary curriculum adjustments so that learners can continue to study these courses for a small amount of time each week in the next academic year and then sit those exams in May 2021.

We strongly believe that this is a much fairer and more equitable outcome for Year 10 learners and it will avoid the problem of learners sitting additional exams in September should they choose to appeal awarded grades and the associated distraction from core study this would bring.

Unfortunately, this decision does have the downside that any option subject that learners were planning to sit in Year 11 will no longer be available. However, this will not prevent learners from studying those subjects in the Sixth Form here or at college should they meet the entry criteria. It will not affect learner’s ability to study the individual sciences next year should they be in that cohort.

With this in mind, can you please encourage your son/daughter to continue studying all of their Year 10 courses whilst the school remains closed as they will need to be ready to pick them up again when they return to school in what we hope is the not too distant future.

I do realise that this is a complex issue and if you have any questions or require clarity on anything in this letter, please contact Mr Corner

Yours faithfully

Paul Gamble                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Headteacher
