Year 11 Transition

Dear Parents/Carers

Re: Year 11 Transition

I hope you and your families are safe and keeping well. I wanted to write to you today to give you an update on preparing learners for life after year 11. It has now come to that time in the year when learners would have started their GCSE exams, and as there will be no exams this year, we will stop setting Year 11 home learning based on their GCSE courses. Instead, we are directing all Year 11 students to start preparing for the A-Level, BTEC, or other vocational courses they will be completing next year in the Sixth Form, or in college.

Harrow High Sixth Form have designed Transition Courses for all of the subjects we will be offering next year. They have all been designed by our Lead teachers for those subjects, with the aim of allowing students to develop both the key knowledge and skills required to be successful in that course.  Completing these transition courses will give students a head start, when they begin their new courses in the autumn term, which is more important this year than ever, as there will be a big gap between when they last studied formally in school.

All Harrow High Sixth Form offer holders will be contacted in the w/b 18th May by telephone to check they have started working on their transition courses, based on the subjects they have been offered. If you have yet to send your acceptance slip of starting at our Sixth Form, or want to make any changes, please contact the Sixth Form team on

All of the resources for these transition courses can be found on the Home Learning tab of the school website ( and will be released in two batches, outlined below. Each course has a named contact, if students have any questions or need guidance, and this information alongside all the resources needed to complete the course are outlined on each subject’s course guide. Please read those instructions carefully, including signing up to any on-line platforms such as SENECA.

The following courses are available from Monday (11/05/20):

  • A-Level Biology
  • A-Level Business Studies & Economics
  • A-Level Computer Science
  • A-Level Maths
  • A-Level Physics
  • A-Level Psychology
  • BTEC Science
  • GCSE Maths (resit)
  • ESOL English

The following courses will be available by Friday (15/05/20):

  • A-Level Chemistry
  • A-Level English
  • A-Level Sociology
  • BTEC Business
  • GCSE English (resit)

Please note that offer holders from Stanmore College and Harrow College will receive information directly from those colleges with information about their transition courses, by the end of next week. However, all students are welcome to complete our Sixth Form transition courses even if you do not currently have an offer with us. The GCSE English, GCSE Maths courses are available for those students who are may feel they will need to sit those qualifications next year to achieve a Grade 4 or higher. In addition, our Inclusion team have designed an ESOL Entry Level course, for students who need to develop some of their English language skills before college.

If any of students are struggling about their options after Year 11, the school can organise a careers guidance meeting via telephone, with Mrs Danso, our Careers Advisor. Any students who would want this, should contact Mrs Danso on  to book an appointment.

Whilst we are now preparing our students for life after Year 11, it is important that you understand that they are still valued members of our school community, and are still Harrow High students. Students should continue to complete the daily attendance log in on SMHW, and complete the daily personal development and fitness challenges. Our Year 11 team also will continue with “keeping in touch” calls and any other support in place.

If you have any questions or comments, please do get in touch.

Yours faithfully

Kevin Patel                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Deputy Headteacher & Head of Sixth Form
